Last week at a retreat in Ghana’s capital, I found myself led by the itinerary to a book signing event. Arriving alone and late, I scanned the room for a conversation partner. My gaze settled on an odd-looking older man by the window, seemingly detached from the crowd. His clothes were simple yet tasteful. His weathered hands held a book with reverence, fingers tracing the pages with a gentle touch that revealed a deep appreciation for knowledge.

Intuitively, I sensed that he held valuable wisdom and would have many things to teach me. Intrigued by his demeanor, I said hi to a couple of friends I spotted, obtained a copy of the newly launched book which I had already read an advanced copy, and approached the odd-looking man, noticing he held the same book in his hands.

“This book starts out so wildly I love it,” I said as I flipped through the pages admiring the nice cover.

He smiled knowingly and replied, “There’s so much to learn from the author” motioning for me to sit at the seat across from him and thus began a conversation that would alter my perspective on humility and life in general.

As we talked, I found that he was the CEO of the venue hosting the event, and one of the wealthiest people present. Yet, his unassuming…
