A brief history of my homeland Ghana
The History of The People
Before the Europeans spotted our coasts of gold, Ghana was home to the Ashanti, a powerful tribe in the region. Many other tribes had settled in the areas and had an abundance of natural resources, like gold and ivory. The gold specifically caught the eye of colonizers and attracted them to the shores of Ghana.
While the Portuguese were the first the come in 1471 and built the famous Cape Coast Castle, the land attracted many, much stronger than my people which led to a power struggle for control.
In 1874, Britain took control over parts of Ghana and they changed the name to Gold Coast. With this name change, many other European countries flocked to find gold.
People from Portugal, Britain, Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, and Germany all came to the land and took all they had and even the people as slaves and sent us to foreign lands to work like slaves. A once powerful nation was exploited and weakened for many years, but the people of the Gold Coast decided they would no longer tolerate it. Some strong people saw we had to gain back control of our own country.
